Over the last two decades, Steve has applied his business skills to his many global philanthropic activities, established an internationally renowned global think tank, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and a private family organisation, The Charitable Foundation, which now has over three million direct beneficiaries. He is a sought after international speaker, has received many international awards and is regularly quoted in the media on various subjects, including global peacefulness, terrorism and social development.
He is a philanthropist focused on peace and sustainable development, with an extensive background in international business. A technology industry entrepreneur, Steve built one of Australia’s leading publicly listed IT companies, Integrated Research. He established the Global Peace Index (The IEP's research and Indexes are today used by multilateral organisations from the World Bank to the UN and taught in 1000s of university courses across the globe).
Two-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and one of Australia's largest donors of private aid through his family foundation, Steve founded The Charitable Foundation around 20 years ago, one of the largest private overseas aid organisations based in Australia.
Steve Killelea's $20 million sell down of 6.6 million shares in software group Integrated Research marks another turning point in the remarkable life of Australia's least well known philanthropist.
Steve is a highly-regarded speaker on systems thinking, peace and prosperity, innovation and entrepreneurship. As he notes in "Peace in the Age of Chaos" about the companies he founded:
"The critical point of difference in both of these ventures was my ability to discover what I call the ‘white space’ on the canvas: to identify a problem or a need that didn’t have an adequate solution. Even if I could not compete in scale with the emerging behemoths such as IBM, HP or Apple, I could identify niche challenges the market had missed and write innovative, user-friendly solutions that gave me an almost unbeatable first-mover advantage. Now, nearly 30 years after its foundation, Integrated Research is still a market leader in its field."
